What Is Gematria?
Gematria is a system of assigning numerical values to letters. It originated in Hebrew tradition, where each letter of the alphabet maps to a specific number. Words or phrases that add up to the same total are considered symbolically connected. The practice has been used for centuries in Torah study, Kabbalistic mysticism, and esoteric traditions. Today, English-language gematria systems apply the same principle to the Latin alphabet.
How Does the Calculator Work?
Type any word, name, or phrase and the calculator converts each letter to its numerical value, then adds them together. For English Simple gematria: HELLO = H(8) + E(5) + L(12) + L(12) + O(15) = 52. The calculator shows the value in multiple cipher systems simultaneously so you can compare results across different traditions.
Gematria Cipher Systems
| System | Mapping | Example: "HELLO" |
|---|---|---|
| English Simple | A=1, B=2 ... Z=26 | 52 |
| English Ordinal | Same as Simple | 52 |
| Reduction | A=1 ... I=9, J=1 restart | 25 |
| Hebrew Standard | Aleph=1, Bet=2, Gimel=3... | (Hebrew letters only) |
What Is Gematria Used For?
Historically, gematria was a tool for Torah interpretation. Rabbinical scholars would find words with the same numerical value and draw connections between the concepts they represent. In Kabbalistic tradition, gematria reveals hidden layers of meaning in sacred texts.
In modern usage, people apply gematria to personal name analysis, studying connections between words and concepts, exploring patterns in language, and creative or spiritual practices. Some use it alongside numerology for a more complete picture of the numerical patterns in their life.
Gematria and Numerology
Both systems connect letters to numbers, but they differ in approach. Numerology reduces everything to single digits (1-9) or master numbers, seeking core vibrations. Gematria preserves the full numerical value and looks for connections between words that share the same total. A word with a gematria value of 74 stays as 74; numerology would reduce it to 7+4 = 11 (master number) or further to 2.
The two systems complement each other well. Gematria reveals word-level connections while numerology provides personal life-theme analysis. Using both gives you two different lenses on the same name or concept.
