How to Calculate Lumber Quantities?

Lumber calculation depends on what you are building. For framing, count the pieces by type (studs, plates, headers, joists) and multiply each by the length. What Are Nominal vs Actual Lumber Dimensions?

A 2x4 does not actually measure 2 inches by 4 inches. The nominal size (2x4) refers to the rough-sawn dimension before the board is dried and planed. The actual finished dimension of a 2x4 is 1.5 x 3.5 inches. A 2x6 is actually 1.5 x 5.5. A 2x8 is 1.5 x 7.25. A 2x10 is 1.5 x 9.25. A 2x12 is 1.5 x 11.25. A 1x4 is 0.75 x 3.5. A 4x4 post is 3.5 x 3.5. This size reduction matters for spacing, clearance, and volume calculations. Always use actual dimensions when calculating how material fits together.

How to Convert Lumber to Board Feet?

Board feet use the nominal dimensions: (thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet) / 12. One 2x4 at 8 feet long: (2 x 4 x 8) / 12 = 5.33 board feet. One 2x10 at 12 feet: (2 x 10 x 12) / 12 = 20 board feet. Ten 2x6 boards at 10 feet each: 10 x (2 x 6 x 10) / 12 = 100 board feet. Board feet are the standard unit for pricing lumber in bulk.
