How to Calculate Shingles for a Roof?

Measure the roof length and the distance from eave to ridge on each roof plane. Multiply length by eave-to-ridge distance for each plane area. Add all planes together for total roof area. Divide by 100 to get roofing squares. Multiply squares by 3 for the number of standard shingle bundles. Add 10-15% waste. The calculator above also estimates ridge cap bundles, felt underlayment rolls, roofing nails, and drip edge pieces for a complete material order.

What Types of Asphalt Shingles Are Available?

Three-tab shingles are the basic flat-profile option with a uniform slot pattern. They weigh 200-250 lbs per square and carry 20-25 year warranties. Architectural (dimensional or laminated) shingles have multiple layers creating a textured, shadow-line appearance that mimics wood shakes or slate. They weigh 300-400 lbs per square, resist wind up to 130 mph, and carry 30-50 year warranties. Premium designer shingles replicate the look of natural slate or cedar at 400+ lbs per square with lifetime warranties. Architectural shingles now account for over 75% of residential installations because the modest cost increase delivers significantly better appearance and durability.

How Many Shingle Bundles Per Square?

Standard three-tab and most architectural shingles: 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft). Some heavy-duty premium shingles require 4-5 bundles per square due to their thicker profile. Each bundle covers approximately 33.3 square feet. At 60-80 lbs per bundle, a 20-square roof needs 60 bundles weighing a total of 3,600-4,800 lbs delivered to the roof. Verify the bundles-per-square figure on the specific product you choose, as it varies by manufacturer and product line. Using the wrong coverage factor leads to either a mid-project shortage or expensive excess material.

What Underlayment Goes Under Shingles?

Felt underlayment (also called tar paper) is the traditional choice. 15 lb felt comes in rolls covering 400 sq ft (4 squares) and provides basic weather protection. 30 lb felt is thicker and more durable at 200 sq ft (2 squares) per roll. Synthetic underlayment has largely replaced felt on new construction because it is lighter, stronger, lays flatter, and resists tearing during installation. One roll of synthetic covers 10 squares (1,000 sq ft). In cold climates, ice and water shield membrane is required along the eaves for at least 24 inches past the interior wall line to prevent ice dam leaks.

How Many Roofing Nails Do I Need?

Standard shingle installation uses 4 nails per shingle. High-wind areas and manufacturer specifications for warranty compliance may require 6 nails per shingle. A bundle of three-tab shingles contains about 26 shingles, needing 104-156 nails per bundle. For a 20-square roof (60 bundles), you need 6,240-9,360 nails. Roofing nails come in 5 lb and 50 lb boxes. A 5 lb box contains approximately 350 nails (1-1/4 inch galvanized). Plan 2-3 lbs of nails per square for 4-nail fastening. Use 1-1/4 inch nails for new sheathing and 1-3/4 inch nails when re-roofing over existing shingles.

What Is Ridge Cap and How Much Do I Need?

Ridge cap shingles cover the ridge (peak) and hip lines of the roof, sealing the joint where two planes meet. Factory-made ridge cap shingles are pre-shaped for a clean, uniform ridge line. One bundle of ridge cap covers approximately 31 linear feet of ridge or hip. Measure all ridge and hip lines on your roof and divide by 31 for the number of ridge cap bundles. A simple gable roof has one ridge line. A hip roof has one ridge and four hip lines, requiring significantly more ridge cap. For a 40-foot ridge on a gable roof, you need approximately 2 bundles of ridge cap.

How to Handle Valleys, Flashing, and Penetrations?

Open valleys use metal flashing with shingles trimmed along each side. Closed-cut valleys weave one plane of shingles across the valley and trim the other plane flush along a chalk line. Step flashing at wall-to-roof transitions consists of L-shaped metal pieces woven between each course of shingles. Pipe boots (rubber or metal cones) seal plumbing vent penetrations. Chimney flashing uses a combination of step flashing, counter flashing, and a cricket (small diverter roof) on the upslope side. Each of these details adds material to the order and requires careful installation technique to maintain a watertight roof.

How Long Do Asphalt Shingles Last?

Three-tab shingles last 15-20 years in typical conditions. Architectural shingles last 25-35 years. Premium designer shingles can reach 40-50 years. Actual lifespan depends on ventilation (poor attic ventilation accelerates shingle aging), installation quality, sun exposure (south-facing slopes wear faster), wind exposure, and regional climate. Hail causes immediate damage that shortens lifespan. Dark-colored shingles absorb more heat and age slightly faster than lighter colors. Regular inspection, prompt replacement of missing or damaged shingles, and maintaining clear gutters all contribute to reaching the maximum service life of the roofing system.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need?
Three bundles per square (100 sq ft). A 2,000 sq ft roof = 20 squares = 60 bundles. Add 10-15% waste.
What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?
Architectural shingles are thicker, textured, wind-resistant to 130 mph, and last 30-50 years. Three-tab are flat and last 15-25 years.
How many nails per shingle?
4 nails standard. 6 nails in high-wind zones. Plan 2-3 lbs of roofing nails per square.
How much ridge cap do I need?
One bundle covers about 31 linear feet of ridge or hip. Measure all ridge and hip lines to determine bundles needed.
What underlayment goes under shingles?
Felt (15 or 30 lb) or synthetic underlayment covers the full deck. Ice and water shield at eaves in cold climates.
How long do architectural shingles last?
25-35 years with proper ventilation and installation. Premium shingles can last 40-50 years.
