More Than a Currency: Ethereum as a Computing Platform

Ethereum is not simply another cryptocurrency competing with Bitcoin. It is a decentralized computing platform where developers deploy self-executing programs called smart contracts. These contracts power decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, stablecoins, NFT marketplaces, and applications that have not yet been imagined. Ether (ETH) is the fuel that pays for computation on this network. Use the converter above to check what any amount of ETH is worth in fiat currencies or other crypto assets at the current market rate.

The Merge: From Mining to Staking

On September 15, 2022, Ethereum completed the most significant upgrade in its history. The Merge switched the consensus mechanism from proof-of-work mining to proof-of-stake validation, reducing the network's energy consumption by approximately 99.95% overnight. Instead of miners competing to solve computational puzzles, validators now lock up 32 ETH as a security deposit and are randomly selected to propose and attest to new blocks. Validators who act honestly earn ETH rewards. Validators who attempt to cheat have their staked ETH destroyed through a process called slashing.

Gas Fees and EIP-1559 Mechanics

Every operation on Ethereum costs gas, a unit that measures computational effort. A simple ETH transfer costs 21,000 gas. A complex DeFi transaction might cost 200,000-500,000 gas. The price per unit of gas fluctuates based on network demand. Since the EIP-1559 upgrade in August 2021, each block has a base fee that adjusts algorithmically based on how full blocks are. This base fee is burned (permanently destroyed), making ETH potentially deflationary during periods of high network activity. Users can add a priority fee (tip) to incentivize validators to include their transaction faster.

Layer 2 Rollups: Scaling Without Compromise

Ethereum's base layer handles roughly 15-30 transactions per second. Layer 2 rollup networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync process transactions off the main chain and post compressed proofs back to Ethereum for final security. This architecture achieves hundreds or thousands of transactions per second at fees that are often under $0.10, while inheriting Ethereum's security guarantees. Most new DeFi and NFT applications now launch on L2 networks first.

DeFi: A Parallel Financial System

Decentralized finance protocols on Ethereum hold tens of billions of dollars in total value locked. Uniswap enables token swaps without an order book or intermediary. Aave and Compound allow permissionless lending and borrowing with algorithmically determined interest rates. MakerDAO generates the DAI stablecoin backed by overcollateralized crypto deposits. Anyone with an Ethereum wallet can interact with them regardless of nationality, credit score, or bank account status.

Staking Rewards and Validator Economics

Running a solo validator requires 32 ETH and a computer with reliable internet. Annual staking yields typically range from 3-5%. Liquid staking services like Lido, Rocket Pool, and Coinbase allow participation with any amount of ETH, issuing derivative tokens (stETH, rETH, cbETH) that represent staked positions. These derivative tokens can be used in DeFi while earning staking rewards simultaneously.

ETH Supply Dynamics After The Merge

Before The Merge, Ethereum issued approximately 13,000 ETH daily to miners. Post-Merge issuance to validators dropped to around 1,700 ETH daily. Combined with the EIP-1559 base fee burn, Ethereum frequently experiences periods where more ETH is burned than issued, making the total supply decrease. This dynamic depends entirely on network usage: high-activity periods are deflationary, low-activity periods are mildly inflationary.

Ethereum Roadmap: Danksharding and Beyond

The Dencun upgrade in March 2024 introduced proto-danksharding (EIP-4844), creating a new blob data type that dramatically reduced costs for Layer 2 rollups. Full danksharding will further expand blob capacity. The broader roadmap includes Verkle trees for more efficient state storage, proposer-builder separation for fairer block construction, and account abstraction for improved wallet user experience.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 ETH worth?
Check the converter for live price. ETH trades 24/7 on global exchanges.
What is gas on Ethereum?
The fee paid for transactions. Measured in gwei. Varies with network congestion from $1 to $100+.
What is proof of stake?
Validators stake 32 ETH as collateral to process transactions, replacing energy-intensive mining since September 2022.
Can I stake my ETH?
Yes. Run your own validator (32 ETH minimum) or use liquid staking services like Lido for any amount.
What is DeFi?
Decentralized Finance: lending, borrowing, and trading without banks, built on Ethereum smart contracts.
Is ETH deflationary?
Potentially. EIP-1559 burns transaction fees. When network activity is high, more ETH is burned than created.
