Bitcoin's Foundation With Ethereum's Brains
Qtum (pronounced "quantum") combines two proven technologies: Bitcoin's UTXO transaction model with Ethereum's Virtual Machine for smart contract execution. This hybrid approach, launched in September 2017, captures the security advantages of Bitcoin's accounting system while enabling the programmability that Ethereum pioneered. The Account Abstraction Layer (AAL) bridges the gap between these two fundamentally different architectures. Check any QTUM value in fiat above.
Lightweight Staking on Any Device
Qtum's proof-of-stake consensus mechanism runs on virtually any hardware, including Raspberry Pi devices and basic cloud servers. Unlike Ethereum's 32 ETH validator requirement, Qtum staking has no minimum threshold. Users can stake with as little as a single QTUM token. The probability of producing a block is proportional to the amount staked. The lightweight resource requirements also enable staking on mobile devices, which the Qtum mobile wallet supports natively.
Ethereum Compatibility Without Copying Ethereum
Because Qtum runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, Solidity smart contracts can be deployed with minimal modifications. Developers familiar with Ethereum tooling (Remix, Truffle, Hardhat) can build on Qtum without learning a new development stack. However, the UTXO base layer means that DeFi protocols designed for account-model chains sometimes require architectural adjustments.
Offline Staking and Enterprise Positioning
Qtum's offline staking mechanism allows token holders to delegate their staking weight to a validator node without transferring custody of their tokens. The Qtum Foundation has also pursued enterprise blockchain applications in China and Southeast Asia, focusing on supply chain management, decentralized data storage, and payment infrastructure. Qtum occupies a technically interesting niche but faces the challenge of demonstrating a compelling reason for developers to choose it over larger, better-supported ecosystems.
