Sri Lanka's Rupee After the Economic Crisis
Sri Lanka experienced a severe economic crisis in 2022 that made international headlines. The country ran out of foreign reserves, defaulted on its sovereign debt for the first time in its history, and the rupee collapsed from around 200 LKR per USD to over 360 in a matter of months. Fuel shortages, power cuts, food inflation, and political upheaval followed. The crisis was triggered by a combination of excessive government borrowing, ill-timed tax cuts, a ban on chemical fertilizers that devastated agriculture, and the loss of tourism revenue during COVID-19.
Since the worst of the crisis, Sri Lanka has entered an IMF program, restructured its debt, and begun implementing reforms that have stabilized the economy. The rupee has settled into a range that, while much weaker than pre-crisis levels, reflects a more realistic valuation. Inflation has come down from crisis peaks, and tourism has begun to recover, bringing much-needed foreign currency back into the country.
What Drives the Rupee Now
Tourism recovery is the most watched factor. Sri Lanka's beaches, ancient cities, tea country, wildlife parks, and cultural heritage drew over two million visitors in good pre-crisis years. The return of tourist spending is critical for rebuilding foreign reserves and supporting the rupee. Early signs are encouraging, with visitor numbers climbing steadily since 2023.
Tea exports remain a reliable source of foreign exchange. Sri Lanka is one of the world's largest tea exporters, and Ceylon tea commands premium prices in international markets. Garment exports and remittances from Sri Lankan workers in the Middle East also contribute meaningfully to the foreign exchange supply.
IMF program compliance plays a role similar to its effect in Pakistan and Egypt. Meeting reform benchmarks unlocks funding tranches and signals to investors that the government is committed to fiscal discipline, which supports the rupee. Any delays or deviations from the program create uncertainty and can trigger sell-offs.
Travel Value in Sri Lanka
The weaker rupee has made Sri Lanka exceptionally affordable for dollar holders. A boutique hotel in the hill country near Ella or Kandy costs 15,000 to 35,000 LKR per night. A meal at a local restaurant runs 800 to 2,000 LKR. A private driver for a full day, the most popular way for tourists to explore the island, costs 8,000 to 12,000 LKR. A train ticket from Kandy to Ella, one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, is about 600 LKR for second class.
At roughly 300 LKR per dollar, the math is simple: divide by 300 or by 3 and move the decimal two places. A 25,000 LKR hotel is about $83. A 1,500 LKR meal is $5. A 10,000 LKR driver for the day is $33. Those prices for the quality of experience Sri Lanka offers represent outstanding value.
USD/LKR Conversion
USD/LKR = 300 means one US dollar buys 300 Sri Lankan rupees. Converting $200 gives you 60,000 LKR. Converting 100,000 LKR to dollars gives you roughly $333.33.
ATMs from Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank, and Sampath Bank are found in all major towns and accept international cards. Credit cards work at hotels, upscale restaurants, and larger shops in Colombo, Kandy, and tourist areas. Smaller establishments, tuk-tuk drivers, and market vendors operate on cash. Exchange counters at Bandaranaike International Airport offer reasonable rates for an initial supply of rupees.
The Train Ride That Sells a Country
The rail journey from Kandy to Ella through Sri Lanka's hill country is consistently rated among the most scenic train rides in the world, and it costs almost nothing. A second-class ticket for the roughly seven-hour journey is about 600 LKR (around $2), and the views of tea plantations, waterfalls, mountain tunnels, and misty valleys are spectacular from start to finish. The route passes through Nuwara Eliya, a colonial-era hill station known as "Little England," and through endless terraces of Ceylon tea bushes that have been cultivated since the 1860s. Tea factory tours along the route cost 500 to 1,000 LKR and include tastings. Ella itself has become a backpacker hub with affordable guesthouses, waterfall hikes, and the famous Nine Arches Bridge, a colonial-era viaduct that has become one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks. The combination of world-class scenery, cultural depth, and rock-bottom prices makes this stretch of Sri Lanka one of the best travel bargains anywhere.
