Card acceptance is reasonable at hotels and restaurants in Port Vila but limited on outer islands. Cash in vatu is essential for markets, nakamals, transport, and island tours. Australian dollars are sometimes accepted informally but vatu is the standard currency.

Land Diving and Outer Islands

Vanuatu is the birthplace of bungee jumping, or more precisely, the land diving (naghol) ceremony of Pentecost Island, where men leap from wooden towers 20 to 30 meters high with vines tied to their ankles. The ceremony, performed between April and June to ensure a good yam harvest, predates modern bungee by centuries and is one of the most spectacular traditional rituals in the Pacific.
