What Is Your Body Type?

Body type classification divides people into three general categories based on skeletal frame, muscle tendency, and fat distribution. Ectomorphs have narrow frames, long limbs, and difficulty gaining weight. Mesomorphs have medium frames, gain muscle easily, and tend toward athletic builds. Endomorphs have wider frames, gain weight easily, and carry more body fat. Most people are a combination of two types rather than a pure category. This calculator estimates your body type from your measurements.

Somatotype Origins

The three-body-type system was developed by psychologist William Sheldon in the 1940s. While the original theory linking body type to personality has been thoroughly debunked, the physical classification remains useful as a general framework for understanding how different bodies respond to training and nutrition. Modern exercise science uses somatotypes descriptively rather than prescriptively – your body type influences your starting point but does not limit your potential.

Training and Nutrition by Body Type

Ectomorphs benefit from higher calorie intake, emphasis on compound lifts, and limited cardio to support muscle building. Mesomorphs respond well to balanced training and moderate calorie intake – they gain both muscle and fat relatively easily. Endomorphs often see best results with slightly higher protein, moderate carbohydrates, and regular cardio alongside strength training to manage body composition. These are starting frameworks, not rigid rules. Individual responses to training and nutrition vary more within body types than between them.

Can You Change Your Body Type?

You cannot change your skeletal frame, but you can significantly change your body composition through training and nutrition. An endomorph who loses fat and builds muscle will look and perform very differently from their untrained state. An ectomorph who follows a structured strength program with a calorie surplus can build substantial muscle over time. Body type describes tendencies, not destinations. Consistent effort over months and years produces changes that far exceed what any body type classification would predict.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three body types?
Ectomorph (thin, narrow frame), mesomorph (muscular, medium frame), and endomorph (wider frame, gains weight easily). Most people are a combination of two types.
How do I know my body type?
Look at your wrist circumference, shoulder width, and how easily you gain muscle or fat. This calculator uses your measurements to estimate your dominant somatotype.
Does body type determine my fitness potential?
No. Body type describes your starting point and tendencies. Training, nutrition, and consistency determine your actual results regardless of body type.
Should I eat differently based on body type?
Body type can inform your starting macro ratios, but individual response matters more. Track results for 2–3 weeks and adjust based on how your body responds.
Is the body type system scientifically valid?
The physical classifications are useful as general descriptions. The original psychological theories attached to body types have been discredited. Use somatotypes as a rough guide, not gospel.
Can an ectomorph build muscle?
Yes. Ectomorphs can build significant muscle with a calorie surplus, adequate protein, and progressive strength training. It may take longer than for a mesomorph, but the results are achievable.
