Calculate DESI (Dimensional Weight) for shipping in kg or lb. Used by international cargo carriers
What Is Desi?
Desi (also spelled "deci" or "desi") is a volume-based measurement unit used in shipping and logistics, primarily in Turkey and some Middle Eastern countries. One desi equals one cubic decimeter, which is the same as 1 liter of volume (1,000 cubic centimeters or 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm). Shipping companies use desi to calculate volumetric weight, which determines shipping costs when a package is large but lightweight. Enter your package dimensions in the calculator above to find the desi value and compare it with actual weight for shipping cost estimation.
How to Calculate Desi?
Desi = (Length x Width x Height) / 3,000, where dimensions are in centimeters. A package measuring 40 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm has a desi value of (40 x 30 x 20) / 3,000 = 8 desi. Alternatively, since 1 desi = 1,000 cm³, you can calculate the volume in cubic centimeters and divide by 1,000: 40 x 30 x 20 = 24,000 cm³ / 1,000 = 24 desi as pure volume. The /3,000 formula is the logistics convention that equates 3,000 cm³ of package volume to 1 kg of volumetric weight, which is the shipping industry standard in Turkey.
Desi vs Actual Weight
Shipping companies charge based on whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight (desi weight). A large but light package (like pillows or foam) has high desi but low actual weight, so desi determines the price. A small but heavy package (like metal parts) has low desi but high actual weight, so actual weight determines the price. This system ensures carriers are compensated fairly whether they run out of truck space (from bulky items) or weight capacity (from dense items) first. Understanding both values helps you estimate shipping costs accurately before sending a package.
Desi Calculation for Different Carriers
Different Turkish shipping companies use slightly different desi factors. The most common divisor is 3,000 (meaning 3,000 cm³ = 1 desi kg), used by most domestic Turkish cargo companies including Yurtici Kargo, Aras Kargo, and MNG Kargo. International carriers like DHL, FedEx, and UPS typically use 5,000 as the divisor for international shipments, meaning 5,000 cm³ = 1 volumetric kg. Always check your specific carrier's volumetric weight formula before estimating costs. The calculator above supports both 3,000 and 5,000 divisors so you can compare domestic and international shipping calculations.
How to Reduce Shipping Desi?
Since desi is based on package dimensions, reducing box size directly reduces shipping cost. Use the smallest box that safely fits your product with appropriate padding. Avoid excessive empty space inside packages. For multiple items, consolidate into fewer, more efficiently packed boxes rather than shipping separately. Vacuum-seal soft goods like clothing and textiles to reduce volume. Choose packaging materials that provide protection without excessive thickness. For e-commerce businesses, optimizing package dimensions is one of the most effective ways to reduce shipping costs, often saving 20-40% compared to using oversized standard boxes.
Desi in Turkish E-Commerce
Turkish online marketplaces like Trendyol, Hepsiburada, and n11 use desi calculations for seller shipping fees. Sellers must accurately declare product dimensions and weight. Underdeclaring desi results in surcharges from the carrier. Overdeclaring means paying more than necessary. For marketplace sellers, managing desi is a key profitability factor. Products with high desi relative to their value (large, lightweight items like lamp shades, storage boxes, or decorative items) have inherently higher shipping costs as a percentage of revenue. Smart sellers factor desi-based shipping costs into their pricing strategy and product selection decisions.
Converting Desi to Other Units
1 desi = 1 cubic decimeter = 1 liter = 1,000 cubic centimeters = 61.024 cubic inches. In volumetric weight terms (using the 3,000 divisor): 1 desi = 1 kg volumetric weight. Using the 5,000 divisor (international standard): 5 liters of volume = 1 kg volumetric weight. To convert from desi to cubic feet: multiply by 0.03531. To convert from desi to cubic meters: divide by 1,000. These conversions help when comparing shipping quotes between Turkish domestic carriers (using desi) and international carriers (using volumetric weight in kg based on different divisors).
Irregular Shape Desi Calculation
For non-rectangular packages, desi is calculated using the smallest rectangular box that would contain the item (the bounding box). Measure the maximum length, maximum width, and maximum height of the package as if placing an imaginary rectangular box around it. Tubes and cylindrical packages are measured by their length and diameter (the bounding box is length x diameter x diameter). Irregularly shaped items may need custom packaging that minimizes wasted space within the bounding box. Some carriers offer triangular or tube-specific pricing formulas, but the standard rectangular bounding box calculation is the default in the Turkish shipping industry for all package shapes.
