How to Convert Shoe Sizes?

Shoe sizes vary between countries and systems, making conversion essential for online shopping, international travel, and importing footwear. The major systems are US, UK, EU (European), and CM/JP (centimeters, used in Japan and Korea). A US men's 10 equals UK 9.5, EU 44, and approximately 28 cm. A US women's 8 equals UK 6, EU 39, and approximately 25 cm. Enter your current shoe size and system in the converter above to find the equivalent in all other sizing standards instantly.

US Shoe Size Chart

The US system uses different scales for men, women, and children. Women's sizes run approximately 1.5 sizes larger than men's for the same foot length: a women's 9.5 equals a men's 8. Children's sizes run from 0 (newborn) to 13.5, then restart at 1 for youth sizes. Common reference points for US men: size 7 = 25 cm foot, size 8 = 26 cm, size 9 = 27 cm, size 10 = 28 cm, size 11 = 29 cm, size 12 = 30 cm. Half sizes differ by approximately 4mm (about 1/6 inch) in foot length.

EU Shoe Size System

The European (Paris point) system uses a single scale for both men and women, numbered approximately 33-50 for adults. The unit is 2/3 of a centimeter (6.67mm). EU sizes do not distinguish between men's and women's feet of the same length, which simplifies conversion but ignores width differences. Common conversions: EU 38 = US women's 7.5, EU 40 = US women's 9, EU 42 = US men's 8.5, EU 44 = US men's 10, EU 46 = US men's 12. EU sizes are standard across continental Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

UK Shoe Size System

UK sizes use a barleycorn scale (1/3 inch per size) and are approximately one size smaller than US men's sizes. A US men's 10 is a UK 9.5. For women, the offset is about 2 sizes: a US women's 8 is a UK 6. UK sizing is used in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and some Commonwealth countries. The UK system starts at size 0 for children (equivalent to 4 inches or approximately 10.2 cm foot length) and extends to size 15 or beyond for the largest adult feet.

How to Measure Your Foot Correctly?

Stand on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall. Mark the tip of your longest toe (which is not always the big toe). Measure the distance from the wall to the mark in centimeters. This measurement is your foot length, which converts directly to the CM/JP sizing system and converts to other systems using standard charts. Measure both feet because they are often slightly different sizes, and use the larger measurement. Measure in the afternoon when feet are slightly swollen from daily activity, which gives a more accurate fit for shoes worn throughout the day. Add approximately 1 cm to your foot length for the ideal shoe interior length, allowing room for toe movement.

Width Sizing

Shoe length is only half the equation. Width varies significantly and affects comfort more than most people realize. US and UK systems use letter codes: narrow (A or AA for women, B for men), standard (B for women, D for men), wide (D for women, E or EE for men), and extra wide (E or EE for women, EEE or EEEE for men). EU sizes do not include width designation, which is why EU-sized shoes from different brands can feel dramatically different despite being the same size number. If standard-width shoes pinch your feet or leave excess space, try a different width rather than going up or down a length size.

Brand Variations and Fitting Tips

Shoe sizes are not perfectly standardized across brands. A size 10 from Nike may fit differently than a size 10 from Adidas or New Balance. Running shoes often fit a half size smaller than casual shoes. Italian and French brands tend to run narrow. American brands tend to run wider. When buying online, check the brand's specific size chart rather than relying on general conversion tables. Read customer reviews about sizing (many note "runs small" or "runs large"). When in doubt, order from retailers with free returns. The best fit allows a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the shoe tip, with no pinching at the widest part of your foot.

Frequently asked questions

What is US men's 10 in EU?
EU 44. US men's sizes are approximately EU size minus 33.5, though this varies slightly between brands.
What is the difference between US men's and women's sizes?
Women's sizes run about 1.5 sizes larger. A women's 9.5 equals a men's 8 for the same foot length.
How do I measure my foot size?
Stand on paper, mark heel to longest toe, measure in cm. This gives your CM/JP size directly and converts to other systems via charts.
What shoe width letters mean?
Standard width: B (women) / D (men). Wide: D (women) / E (men). Narrow: A (women) / B (men). Width affects comfort significantly.
Why does the same size fit differently across brands?
Shoe sizing is not perfectly standardized. Brands use different lasts (foot molds). Always check brand-specific size charts.
Should I size up for running shoes?
Generally yes, by half a size. Feet swell during running, and toes need room to prevent blisters and black toenails.
