Time Duration Calculator
Calculate the duration between two times in hours, minutes, and seconds, with timezone support.
What Is a Time Duration Calculator?
A time duration calculator finds the amount of time between two points or converts between time units. How many hours and minutes between 9:15 AM and 4:45 PM? The answer is 7 hours and 30 minutes. How many days between March 15 and June 20? The answer is 97 days. How many minutes are in 3.5 hours? The answer is 210 minutes. Enter your times or values in the calculator above to find durations, convert units, and perform time arithmetic without the mental math of base-60 conversion.
How to Calculate Time Between Two Times?
Subtract the start time from the end time. For times crossing noon or midnight, convert to 24-hour format first. 9:30 AM to 2:15 PM: 14:15 minus 9:30 = 4 hours 45 minutes. When minutes in the end time are less than the start time, borrow an hour: 3:10 PM to 5:05 PM = 17:05 minus 15:10, borrow to get 16:65 minus 15:10 = 1 hour 55 minutes. For times crossing midnight: 10:30 PM to 2:15 AM = (24:00 - 22:30) + 2:15 = 1:30 + 2:15 = 3 hours 45 minutes.
Time Unit Conversions
1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds. 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds. 1 minute = 60 seconds. 1 week = 7 days = 168 hours. 1 year = 365 days = 8,760 hours (366 days in a leap year). 1 month varies: 28-31 days. For precise calculations involving months, specify the actual month since February has 28-29 days while January has 31. The calculator above handles all these conversions and accounts for varying month lengths.
Decimal Time vs Clock Time
Payroll and billing systems often use decimal hours (7.75 hours) instead of clock time (7 hours 45 minutes). To convert clock time to decimal: divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. To convert decimal to clock time: the whole number is hours, multiply the decimal by 60 for minutes. 6.25 hours = 6 hours and 0.25 times 60 = 15 minutes. Common conversions: 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes = 0.50, 45 minutes = 0.75. This conversion is essential for timesheet calculations and hourly billing.
How to Calculate Days Between Dates?
Count the days from the start date to the end date. For quick estimates, count full months (using 30 or 31 as appropriate) and add remaining days. From January 15 to April 10: January remaining = 16 days, February = 28, March = 31, April 1-10 = 10 days. Total = 85 days (86 in a leap year). For business days, exclude weekends and holidays. The calculator above handles both calendar days and business days, accounting for weekends automatically. Add holidays manually based on your location and the applicable holiday schedule.
Time Zone Conversions
When calculating durations across time zones, convert both times to the same zone first. If a call starts at 9:00 AM EST and ends at 11:30 AM PST: convert to the same zone. PST is 3 hours behind EST, so 11:30 AM PST = 2:30 PM EST. Duration: 2:30 PM minus 9:00 AM = 5 hours 30 minutes. Common offsets from UTC: EST = UTC-5, CST = UTC-6, MST = UTC-7, PST = UTC-8, GMT/UTC = 0, CET = UTC+1, IST = UTC+5:30, JST = UTC+9. Daylight saving time shifts these offsets by one hour during summer months in participating regions.
Countdown and Elapsed Time
Countdown calculations answer "how long until" a future event. Days until a wedding, hours until a flight departure, or weeks until a project deadline. Elapsed time calculations answer "how long since" a past event. Age calculations, time since an order was placed, or duration of an ongoing process. Both use the same time subtraction principles but in different directions. The calculator above handles both by accepting any two dates or times and computing the interval between them, regardless of which comes first chronologically. Negative durations simply mean the events are in the opposite order from what was entered. This bidirectional flexibility makes the calculator useful for both countdown and elapsed time scenarios without needing separate tools or modes for forward versus backward calculations.
