A Cryptocurrency Without a Blockchain
IOTA does not use a blockchain. Instead, it uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) called the Tangle, where each new transaction confirms two previous transactions. This structure eliminates the need for miners or validators in the traditional sense, enables feeless transactions, and theoretically improves throughput as network activity increases. The IOTA Foundation, headquartered in Berlin, develops the protocol specifically for machine-to-machine payments in the Internet of Things. Convert any MIOTA amount to fiat above.
The Coordinator and the Road to Full Decentralization
Since launch, IOTA has relied on a central component called the Coordinator, a node operated by the IOTA Foundation that issues milestone transactions to confirm the validity of the Tangle's state. This has been IOTA's most criticized feature because it makes the network effectively centralized. The IOTA 2.0 protocol aims to remove the Coordinator entirely by implementing a leaderless consensus mechanism where nodes reach agreement through a voting process weighted by mana, a reputation resource. Mainnet removal of the Coordinator remains the project's most significant pending milestone.
Feeless Transactions and Micropayment Potential
Zero transaction fees are IOTA's primary practical differentiator. In traditional blockchain networks, fees create a minimum viable transaction size: it makes no economic sense to send $0.001 if the fee is $0.05. IOTA's feeless model enables transactions of any size, including fractions of a cent. This makes previously impossible business models viable, such as pay-per-second streaming or autonomous vehicles paying tolls in real time.
ShimmerEVM and the Staging Network
Shimmer launched in 2022 as IOTA's staging network where new features are tested with real value before deployment to the main IOTA network. ShimmerEVM adds Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility, allowing Solidity smart contracts to run on a feeless base layer. DeFi protocols and dApps have begun deploying on ShimmerEVM, giving the ecosystem its first functional smart contract environment.
Industrial Partnerships and Real-World Pilots
The IOTA Foundation has pursued institutional partnerships more aggressively than most crypto projects. Collaborations with Zebra Technologies for supply chain tracking, Dell Technologies for data confidence fabrics, and the European Union's EBSI blockchain initiative have kept IOTA visible in enterprise conversations. However, translating pilot projects into production-scale deployments that generate meaningful token demand has proven difficult. The gap between impressive partnership announcements and measurable on-chain activity remains IOTA's most persistent challenge.
