How to Calculate Quikrete Bags Needed?

Quikrete is a pre-mixed concrete product available in 50, 60, and 80-pound bags. Each bag yields a specific volume of mixed concrete: an 80-pound bag yields 0.6 cubic feet, a 60-pound bag yields 0.45 cubic feet, and a 50-pound bag yields 0.375 cubic feet. Calculate the total volume of your project in cubic feet (length x width x depth, all in feet), then divide by the per-bag yield. A 4x4-foot slab at 4 inches deep needs 4 x 4 x 0.333 = 5.33 cubic feet, requiring 9 bags of 80-pound Quikrete. The calculator above determines bag counts for all three sizes.

What Quikrete Products Are Available?

Quikrete Concrete Mix (standard gray) is the all-purpose product for slabs, footings, and general concrete work. It contains Portland cement, sand, and gravel already proportioned and achieves approximately 4,000 psi at 28 days. Quikrete 5000 is a high-strength mix reaching 5,000 psi, designed for structural applications and projects where early strength gain matters (it reaches 3,000 psi in just 7 days versus 28 for standard). Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix sets in 20-40 minutes and is specifically formulated for setting posts without mixing. Quikrete Crack-Resistant concrete contains synthetic fibers that reduce shrinkage cracking. Each product has different applications where it performs best.

How Many Bags of Quikrete Per Cubic Yard?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. At 0.6 cubic feet per 80-pound bag, you need 45 bags per cubic yard. At 0.45 cubic feet per 60-pound bag, you need 60 bags. At 0.375 cubic feet per 50-pound bag, you need 72 bags. The total weight per cubic yard is roughly 3,600 pounds regardless of bag size. That means 45 trips carrying 80-pound bags from your vehicle to the project site for every cubic yard of concrete. For projects over 1 cubic yard, a ready-mix truck delivery is usually more practical and surprisingly comparable in cost when you factor in the labor of handling hundreds of bags.

How to Mix Quikrete Properly?

Pour the dry mix into a wheelbarrow, mortar box, or mechanical mixer. Create a depression in the center. Add water gradually, starting with approximately 3 quarts per 80-pound bag. Mix thoroughly until all dry material is incorporated and the consistency is thick but workable, similar to thick oatmeal. The concrete should hold its shape when formed into a ball and not be soupy or dripping. Adding too much water is the most common mixing mistake and dramatically weakens the finished concrete. If the mix is too dry, add water in small splashes (1/4 cup at a time) and mix again. You can always add more water, but you cannot remove excess.

When Should I Use Quikrete vs Ready-Mix?

Use Quikrete bags for projects under 0.5 cubic yards (about 22 bags of 80-pound). This includes small slabs, post footings, repair patches, steps, and setting hardware. The convenience of buying bags at a home center and mixing on your own schedule outweighs the higher per-unit cost at this scale. Use ready-mix concrete for anything over 1 cubic yard. The zone between 0.5 and 1 cubic yard (22-45 bags) is a judgment call. Mixing 45 bags by hand is a full day of heavy physical labor. Renting a portable mixer or ordering a small ready-mix load saves significant time and effort. Ready-mix also provides more consistent quality since it is batched by computer at the plant.

How to Use Quikrete Fast-Setting for Posts?

Dig the post hole to the correct diameter and depth. Add 4 inches of gravel at the bottom. Set the post in the hole and brace it plumb. Pour the dry Fast-Setting mix directly from the bag into the hole around the post, filling to within 3-4 inches of ground level. Add approximately one gallon of water per 50-pound bag, pouring slowly so it soaks into the dry mix. The water activates the cement without the need for premixing. The concrete begins setting in 20-40 minutes and reaches sufficient strength for fence construction in about 4 hours. Do not disturb the post during this initial curing period.

Quikrete Coverage for Common Projects

Fence post (10-inch hole, 36 inches deep): 2 bags of 80 lb. Small sidewalk slab (3x3 ft, 4 inches): 4 bags of 80 lb. Mailbox post footing (12-inch hole, 24 inches deep): 1-2 bags of 80 lb. Step repair (2x3 ft, 6 inches): 5 bags of 80 lb. Small patio pad (4x4 ft, 4 inches): 9 bags of 80 lb. Basketball hoop footing (18-inch hole, 48 inches deep): 8-10 bags of 80 lb. Flagpole base (24-inch hole, 36 inches deep): 12-14 bags of 80 lb. These estimates include typical waste. Round up to the nearest whole bag when purchasing.

Storage and Shelf Life of Quikrete

Unopened Quikrete bags have a shelf life of approximately 12 months when stored properly in a dry, covered area off the ground. The cement in the mix absorbs atmospheric moisture over time and gradually loses strength. Bags stored on bare concrete absorb moisture through the bottom and harden prematurely. Stack bags on pallets or plastic sheeting. If a bag feels lumpy and the lumps do not break apart when manipulated, the cement has partially hydrated and the bag should be discarded. Using degraded Quikrete produces weak concrete that crumbles rather than bearing load. Buy only what you need for the current project and use opened bags within a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How many 80 lb bags of Quikrete per cubic yard?
45 bags. Each 80 lb bag yields 0.6 cubic feet. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.
How many bags for a 4x4 slab at 4 inches?
9 bags of 80 lb Quikrete. Volume is 5.33 cubic feet divided by 0.6 per bag = 8.9, rounded up to 9.
What is the difference between Quikrete and Quikrete 5000?
Standard Quikrete reaches 4,000 psi at 28 days. Quikrete 5000 reaches 5,000 psi and gains strength faster (3,000 psi at 7 days).
How much water per bag of Quikrete?
About 3 quarts per 80 lb bag. Add gradually and mix to a thick, workable consistency. Too much water weakens the concrete.
When should I use bags vs ready-mix?
Bags for under 0.5 cubic yards (22 bags). Ready-mix for over 1 cubic yard. The 0.5-1 yard range is a judgment call based on available labor.
How long does Quikrete take to set?
Standard mix: 24-48 hours for initial set. Fast-Setting: 20-40 minutes. Both reach full strength at 28 days.
